Taylor, Kanye and Obama

Movie stars, singers, the President are all leaders in our society. Being a leader doesn't mean that everyone will always agree with your decisions but you do have to be RESPONSIBLE for your decisions and actions. Below you are going to watch three videos. The first video is of the VMAs when Kayne West takes the microphone away from Taylor Swift. Give me your reaction to the clip. This part of your response should include a main idea and supporting evidence.

The second video clip is a slide show with President Obama talking in the background. He was talking casually with the press and was asked his opinion about the incident. As the leader of our country do you think his comment was appropriate? Why or Why not?

The third video is of Beyonce's acceptance speech. How did Beyonce demonstrate good leadership and how did she demonstrate bad leadership? (Use both the first clip and third clip to answer this question.)

  1. I think it was rude for Kayne West to grab the mike from Taylor's hands. She had rightfully earned her moment on the stage just to have someone interrupt her and humiliate her. Taylor also did nothing to deserve the outburst from Kayne. If I were in Taylor's place I know how embarrased and furious I would be to have a moment as big as this taken away from me by someone I never offended before.
Even though Kayne was obviously wrong and owed Taylor an apology, I think President Obama displayed no leadership traits at all with his inappropriate comment. Children who hear this interview could think it's right to cuss. I myself would have never thought this was President Obama speaking without any proof. It's hard to believe that a respected leader would ever make such a comment that could be phrased otherwise.
Beyonce was the only person who really exhibited leadership traits in the situation. It was graceful of her to allow Taylor to have her moment. When I watched the video where Kayne interrupted Taylor I could tell that Beyonce was shocked and wanted to make things right. The only bad leadership she demonstrated was not standing up for Taylor right when she was interrupted and she also could have stated outright that Kayne was wrong. But overall she acted the most responsibly and reasonably out of all the others involved in this situation.

  2. That was very rude of Kanye to take away Taylor's microphone. She was very happy about receiving that award & Kanye just ruined the moment,I would have reacted the same way as Taylor did if I were her.Of course I'd be angry & unhappy. Kanye had no right to do that, he wasn't thinking..now everyone is talking about it,even the president.
President Obama was also shocked & angry about this, but since he IS the president,he shouldn't have called Kanye West that unappreciative word. He's setting a bad example to the young ones by using words that are inappropriate. Being a leader means that you are being a GOOD influence to your followers. Everyone looks up to him & counts on him to be the right leader for America. I thought that It was very sweet of Beyonce to let Taylor go back on stage and have her moment, she deserved it. Beyonce showed a trait that Obama did not, & that was kindness. She did not call anyone a bad word/name, she kindly gave Taylor the spotlight.

  3. I think it was very inapproopriate for Kanye to take the microphone from Taylor and made a rude comment during her speach. Taylor was just getting into her speach for her VMA award , which she was obviously very proud of. Taylor didn't act on this action, which was very kind of her. But if I was put in her place, I would have been very angry and embarrassed.
I have to admit it was rude of Kanye to do that to Taylor, but what President Obama did, didn't show any leadershipness. He started off responsible, but by the inappropriate comment,he didn't help the situation.
I believe that it was very responsible and kind of Beyonce for her to do that. She showed more of a leadership quality, by giving Taylor a second chance to finish her speach without any interruptions. She showed a good quality by doing so.

  4. I believe that Kanye should not have taken Taylor's microphone away. It was uncalled for and he shows that he does not have the leadership skill of good sportsmanship.Taylor worked hard for it so she deserved that award more than any of the other nominees.
Then when Obama talked about it he made a rude comment. He could have just said that taking the microphone was bad and irresponsible but he was way out of the line for the comment.
I was glad to hear that Beyonce had a two leadership traits that were kindness and good sportsmanship.Beyonce showed both of that trait when she called Taylor to the stage to finish her speech.

  5. I think the way that Kanye handled his emotions toward the Taylor Swift was uncalled for. He had no right to do what he did. Taylor Swift deserved that award and she shouldn't have been interrupted so rudely by Kanye West. Kanye West showed a very bad quality that no leader should have. He showed disrespect therefore everyone else will dis respect him. This is why people have to do unto others as you would have people do unto you.
I think that president Obama wasn't thinking of the consequences that his actions could bring. This shows that he wasn't thinking like a leader at the time that he made that unappropriated statement. The comment also puts Kanye West down which shows that that Obama wasn't being a good leader. Obama has no excuse for his actions because he is one of the most respected leaders in our country and now the respect of most people has most likely decreased.
I think that Beyonce's actions during the incident were both good and bad. The good thing about her actions is that she respected Taylor Swift and gave her a second chance to have her spot in the limelight like how all winners do. The bad thing that Beyonce did was that she didn't defend Taylor Swift. This action states that she agrees with Kanye West. Even though you could tell she was appalled by Kanye West's actions, she still didn't say anything about it. This shows that Beyonce was being respectful and disrespectful simultaneously.

  6. I think that Kanye was being very inconsiderate of Taylor. He just grabbed the mike from her and just started saying that Taylor didn't deserve the award. Kanye just took Taylor's spotlight and just ruined it. It was an unforgettable moment for everyone at the VMA's. That was her moment but he just had to come out and ruin it for her. That was just sad.
I think Obama's response was an abrupt response. He just should have said that Kanye was being rude. Obama was going down to his level by saying that.
For Beyonce, she was being very responsible and gave Taylor back her spotlight because she remembered wen she was 17 receiving an award. She just gave Taylor the opportunity to shine in front of the crowd. I think that was such a great leadership skill you can reflect on. She had good sportsmanship and was a great team player.

  7. I was rude and immature for Kanye West to take away the microphone away from Taylor and say that Beyonce had "one of the best videos of all time." He showed no respect to Taylor Swift's hard work and dedication to her work.

From what President Obama's comment about Kanye West is inappropriate. He wasn't being a good role model as a president. It could've been said in a diffeent way that could be more appropriate.

(I will write the comment about Beyonce once the video is availible again)

  8. I thought it was rude and disrespectful of Kanye to just take away Taylor's microphone while she was making her speech but if it was to say that Taylor is a great singer or deserves the award, it would be okay. Instead he just interupted her to say that Beyonce had one of the best videos, which was during a very inappropriate time. I don't think Taylor deserved to have her moment and dream ruined by somebody else. If I was in Taylor's position, I would be very embarrassed and I wouldn't accept Kanye's apology. Kanye acted really immature and inappropriate at that time, and even though he did not literally say that Beyonce should've won instead of Taylor, evreyone knows that is what he meant.

Obama's comment about Kanye West and what happened at the VMAs didn't sound like it came from a leader. Since, he is the president he should act more wise and give advice for the future. I think that he should be careful what he says, because being the president, everyone expects him to be a leader and role model for others around him. His comment was really inappropriate and sets a bad example for everybody.

By the way, the last video does not work, so I watched another one online.

Beyonce demonstrated good leadership by giving Taylor a second chance to have her moment at the VMAs, it shows that she's not a selfish person and thinks and cares about others around her. She demonstrated bad leadership during Kanye's outburst, because she did not stand up and say something about it, instead she just sat there and pretended that nothing had happened, but overall I think she is a good person and leader because she noticed how she acted and made everything right afterwards.

  9. That was really mean for Kanye West to just take the mike and humiliate her by saying those words. Not just embarrassing Taylor, but probably himself and Beyonce.I think I heard a couple of people booing.I just hope that they were booing Kanye and not Taylor.Beyonce was very thoughtful to give up her time to shine for Taylor to recapture her moment.Beyonce showed great sportsmanship and was a great team player.Obama, on the other hand, was a little embarrasing, I got to admit. He went a little overboard talking the people.

  10. I think that Kanye West was very rude.He came up took the mike and was saying bad comments to Tayor. I think that he was trying to make Tayor feel bad but only made himself embarrassed. Beyonce on the other hand was very caring and thoughtful of Tayor and let her speak. She was a good friend also.Obama I think went to far and didn't need to call him a bad name.He did do something bad but you never need to cuss.Being the president I also thought that he needed to be in even more control.

  11. As Kanye West took the microphone from Taylor Swift showed that he had no respect for her. Showing his rude and inapropriate behavior by going against on her rightful award, only showed us a bad side of him.

As for President Obama, his comment to the press showed no control of his words. By being entitled as president, he should have had more self-control on his words by getting to say his opinion, but in a more appropriate way.

    - the video for beyonce had been move and cannot be played -

  12. When i first saw this video, I was shocked at why Kanye would even go up on stage and take the microphone away from Taylor. It was her first award and it was probably very special to her until Kanye had to go on stage and ruin it. Kanye had not right to do what he had done on stage. It was rude and totally out of the blue. Now he's shown us the other side of him, and everyone is talking about it. Obama on the other hand, was even more inappropriate, calling Kanye that word. Yes, he deserved being called that but, not from the President. Obama is a leader and leaders are supposed to be role models to all the people of the United States to be like him. Obama needs to have more self-control over what he says and where he says it. Beyonce was a great friend and she showed good leadership qualities when she reseived her award by letting Taylor have her moment at the spotlight. Beyonce showed bad leadership qualities when she just sat there speechless when Kanye told Taylor off on stage. Beyonce should have stood up for Taylor and prove Kanye was wrong.

  13. when i saw the video i was so shocked and mad when kanye said that. That was rude and innappropriate but after that everyone cheered her on to tell her she did great. Obama was more rude compared to kanye. He wasnt professional about it and wasnt a good leader. He needs more self control of what he says. Beyonce is a great person and let Taylor have her moment in the spotlight. i think that was a great thing she did. But she shouldve acted or at least said something when kanye stood up and told Taylor that she was better.

  15. When I watched the VMA's, I was shocked. I think it was very rude and immature of Kanye to steal Taylor's spotlight like that. Kanye acted like a bully to a poor, young 19 year old girl-I think he needs to learn self control.

Obama's comment about Kanye was also extremely inappropriate-although everyone is entitled to their own opinion and is allowed to speak their mind, as our president, Mr. Obama should act like a role model to us citizens. If Obama wanted to express his feelings about Kanye, he could have at least stated his comment in a nicer, more appropriate way - Obama went overboard this time.

Beyonce is a very sweet, understanding lady and thought back to when SHE was 17 and won the moonman. She let Taylor have the moment she earned and deserved-this time, without any random outbursts. When Kanye made the comment, Beyonce just sat there speechless-I probably would have been shocked, too. She should have said something then, but it probably was hard to speak out with all the boo-ing caused by the audience. Beyonce did do the right thing later on, however.

  16. When Kanye West took the mike from Taylor Swift, I thought that it was very rude and was unnecessary. I was shocked when Kanye West did that because I expected better from him. However, Beyonce was very kind when she gave Taylor her moment. I think that what Obama said was very inappropriate even though Kanye totally deserved it. But imagine if children was watching him say that on TV. I think that Obama should not have said it because he is a president and people and citizens look up to him as a role model. I think that Obama should have said his statement in a better way because many people were watching it.

  17. I was shocked at what Kanye West did to Taylor Swift because Kanye stole Taylor’s moment and turned it into his own moment out of selfish greed for attention. I was also confused because I wasn’t sure if Beyonce had really won or not.
The president has a job similar to a mother. It never ends. By Obama calling Kanye “the word”, he set an example for many young children who will now wonder what “the word” means. Soon parents will also question weather Obama is the right choice. Leaders in our society always have to think before they act. Apparently, either Obama or Kanye did so.

  18. I thought it was completely rude for Kanye West to steal Taylor Swift's moment on stage. Kanye himslef has won many awards and I don't remember anyone stealing his moment. I belive this was done for the attention. He showed no leadership quality at all.

As for Obama, he was right about how what Kanye did was wrong, but at the same time it was wrong of him to call Kanye something that was just inapproriate. Obama should know that his audience are not just adults, and cut some slack on the president? He's the president, he should know what is right from wrong. I mean think about it, how do you think his daughters reacted?

Both Obama and Kanye showed no act of good leadership qualities. No matter if your president or not, think before you speak.

  19. Ummmm, I'm not really sure what to put because I wasn't able to see anything, and it was hard to understand what President Obama was saying. I'm sorry but I had no idea about what was going on, but by what I have read that other people wrote was that Kanye West stole the microphone from Taylor Swift, and that Obama called him an inappropriate word. If Kanye West really did steal the microphone from Taylor Swift, the only thing I have to say is what in the world was going on in his tiny mind!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, I don't want to hurt anybody saying that, but seriously, he disrespected Taylor Swift, who is also well known by many people. I don't know what his excuse was, but I don't really care either. There is no excuse for what he did. He should think just like they told us to do in elementary school. How would you feel if somebody else did the same thing to you. Thinking about this, I think he would probably regret what he did. As for what Obama said, I think that was inappropriate. I know he is mad, just like many other people who loved Taylor, but he has to controll himself. Afterall, he is the president, the person who is supposed to be a huge role model towards all of the United States. Obama was right, in my opinion to get mad at Kanye West, but was very wrong calling him that. Just imagine, what if little kids who are in elementary school heard that and then everybody there started saying that word just because they heard the president say it, thinking that it was okay. I have no idea about what happened with Beyonce.

  20. I think that what Kanye West said and did was very rude. Taylor was so happy to get her award, and Kanye had to ruin it for everyone. He appeared on the stage and just took the microphone from Taylor’s hands. And if that wasn’t enough, he said that Beyonce had one of the best videos. That was very uncalled for, and I have no idea why he even said that. He obviously wanted attention for himself. I don’t think Kanye showed any leadership qualities.
As for the president, even though he was talking “casually” with the press, he probably already knew that this would end up somewhere on the internet or the TV or something. I mean, it’s the PRESS. Yet, he still said that word, which was inappropriate, no matter what Kanye had said. So President Obama was angry, but that did not give him any right to cuss, especially when younger children would hear it. I think it was inappropriate because there was no need to say that word. He did not show a lot of leadership qualities either. As a leader, he should have had more skills on what he said. He did not think of the children out there, and only thought that the people who looked up to him as adults. He should’ve watched what came out of his mouth.
I don't know what happened with Beyonce, but I would really like to see what did happen.

  21. I think it was very rude and uncalled for what Kanye did. He could have kept his comments to himself, but instead he embarrassed Taylor and ruined her moment.

I did not see what President Obama said or what Beyonce did.

  22. I now saw the tmz video, and all I can say is wooooow! That was an extremely unenessacary thing Kanye West did.I felt so bad for Tayor Swift. She was so happy and shocked that she won the award, and then Kanye just ruined it for her. In my opinion, no matter how famous or not, everybody is born with the right towards respect. If I were Taylor, I would have started crying, and I would have marched off of the stage. She took it badly, but in a good way I think. She handled the situaion calmly, and respected Kanye back when he direspected her. She did not insult him or call him anything mean, or talk back to him. She just stayed there and tried to continue her speech. I am especially mad at Kanye West for taking the microphone away from her. No one cares what his opinion is, they just want to know who won. And after all, what ever happend to the saying "Respect your elders." If she respected him and he is an elder, he should have respected her back. I think the only reason Kanye did what he did was to get even more attention. Hmmmm....Who knows?

  23. What Kanye West did to Taylor Swift at the VMA's was very rude and disrespectful. It wasn't right to take the microphone away from her and say that Beyonce had "one of the best videos of all time". He embarrassed Taylor in front of millions of people all over the world who watch the VMA's. Kanye needs to learn how to control himself.
As the president of the United States, Obama did not show any more respect as Kanye West did. It was very inappropriate for Obama to call Kanye that. Obama obviously did not think that Kanye did something good, but he still shouldn't have used a bad word to describe him. He could have used a more appropriate phrase to describe what Kanye did that night.
(I did not see what Beyonce did.)

  24. When Kanye suddenly took the microphone and did what he did, I was shocked. At first, I thought “Wow, he has guts. To just take that action, and know that he is being recorded..” but to actually think that someone would have an outburst like his onstage, is amazing. To me, it is amazing because I would never have thought for someone to actually go on stage, and interrupt a speech as it is being recorded. Also, I think it shows leadership quality (in the wrong way), a small amount. For him to speak his thoughts may teach others to be outspoken, and tell others their own opinion. However, the way he spoke out on TV was not a way to express your thoughts. To interrupt someone does not show a good leadership quality, although it may teach someone to speak their mind. To interrupt someone as they are speaking, is very rude.

I think the President’s comment was appropriate and not appropriate. First, he should not have answered the way he did. He may have answered the question, but it was in a very inappropriate way. He included name calling, in which leaders should never participate in. Also, many students and kids are believing in him, and so he may have just taught the kids that it is okay to swear, or name-call. Which neither are appropriate to perform. Furthermore, his wording of Kanye’s action, was very uncalled for.

  25. I think what Kanye West did was rude and inconsiderate because he took away Taylor's "moment". Taylor was clearly happy for her achievement and Kanye just came up and completely ruined Taylor's spotlight. Not only that this was Taylor's FIRST VMA award so, that is definetley something to keep in mind. In what Obama said I think is true. Obama was just trying to comment of the situation in his opinion. Why should Obama have to comment in a certain way just because he is the president. Should Obama have lied? No he shouldn't have because then he would have been NOT showing honesty to his citizens. They asked him for his opinion not the "president's opinion". Therefore I think that Obama was right in every way.

  26. I don't understand ALOT of it. I don't know if it was because i didn't watch it when it happened or yeah. All i know is that Kanye West was rude to Taylor Swift when that was her first time receiving the vma award IM SORRY D:

  27. I think Kanye was out of line when he took the mic away from Taylor. To make matters worse he said Beyonce should have won. He demonstrated poor leadership skills to the kids that looked up to him.
In my opinion, I think what Obama said wasn't his intention to say that word. I agree with Obama though, because Kanye was really rude.
Beyonce did the right thing by letting Taylor have her moment. Taylor is a novice at getting awards, but having a verteran at getting awards, like Beyonce giving Taylor her moment was awesome. Beyonce did the right thing. Kanye just shouldn't have said what he said.

  28. I think what Kanye West did was very childish and rude. No one deserves to be mocked like that. Taylor was almost crying tears of joy until that childish Kanye West came up and ruined the whole happy moment for her.
Furthermore, Kanye West did not apologize in the slightest way. No leader should have any of the qualities Kanye West showed: rudeness, disrespect, and unapologetic.

As the leader of our country, Obama set a very bad example. Obama said a swear word in the video. I think it was very, very, very wrong to say that as the leader of a very good country. Everyone looks up to him: children, adults, and seniors. Obama gave a very bad example as a leader for everyone. Obama could have simply said that Kanye West was disrespectful and childish.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think what Kanye West did to Taylor Swift was rude and savage. It was very childish of him to do that on stage with a lot of people watching. Eventhough he said sorry to Taylor, he can't just do that and expect her to be okay with it. After watching this video, I feel sad for Taylor Swift because she really deserves the award but her moment of joy seemed to be ruined by Kanye West. He should keep his opinions to himself and think how it's going to effect other people before putting his thoughts into actions.

I was surprised when I heard President Obama used bad language towards Kanye West. One thing about being president is that you have to watch your words and becareful with your actions, by now I think that President Obama knows that really well. But what he said to the press was for defending Taylor and letting her know that everyone including the President think what Kanye did was wrong. I'm pretty fine with what President Obama did but it's still being a bad example for young kids. To me, I think President Obama sort of knows that everyone will be disappointed in him because he used bad language, but I think Kanye West really need to know what he did was a mistake and know that he's wrong. Obama could have used better vocabulary, but overall I think that's okay.

  31. In my opinion, Kanye West probably ruined his reputation, just to get noticed. Taylor Swift was pretty angry, but at least Beyonce gave her another chance to get up on stage.
President Obama's response was not appropriate, but he was expressing his opinion of what he thought.
Beyonce showed good leadership, by allowing Taylor Swift, to come up upon the stage and redo her acception sppech WITHOUT interuption.

  32. I think what Kanye did was very inapropriate! I mean it was Taylor's 1st VMA award. Why doesent he just let her except the award. What obama said was true but i dont think he sould have called him a jack@$$, but he was angry and mad. Although, i guess he diserved it. On the other hand beyonce was being very under standing and leadership like. When she got her award she kindly let Taylor come up and say the rest of the speech. But he did say sorry to Taylor.

  33. For the record...
I think Kanye is an a pompous idiot. He not only ruined Taylor's moment but he insulted the people who voted for Taylor's video. Kanye is a self proclaimed leader, meaning he is only a leader in his mind. He probably thought he would be showing his leadership in the music industry, but ended up looking like an arrogant jerk.
I have mixed feelings about Beyonce. I was disgusted by the smirk on her face when it was happening. I have a feeling she knew it might happen, and her reaction was complete shock that he did it. I do respect her efforts to make it right. It will be interesting to see if her friendship with Kanye changes.
As for Obama...High Five. Leaders are not perfect, they are human. He was giving his opinion. I am impressed he even knew what happened.

  34. I believe that Kanye's interruption of Taylor Swift's speech was very immature and rude. To me, I think that Kanye West was just trying to get on the media so he would get more popular. Beyonce must have been mortified. It was very kind of Beyonce to let Taylor Swift have her moment of glory again. I hope Kanye West gets back what he dealt out on that day. Poor Taylor Swift, she must have been hiding how she really felt about the incident to the media. Obama was 100% correct about Kanye West and I just loved his opinion on that incident. I'm interested to see what will happen with the relationship between Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Kanye West.
