Please share what you learned from each of your sessions at the CADA conference. Think about how we can use what you learned in class or for the entire school. Your entry should be a well developed paragraph. 2-3 sentence per session.
Due by Friday at 10PM.
At CADA I learned:
ReplyDeleteSession 1- Publicity with a Flair
In Publicity with a Flair I learned that you can separate your information using different fonts, and using bright and different colors on a poster can draw other. The demonstrator also told us how we can use a paper plate, attach that to a fork, and on that paper plate has information about upcoming events. She also said we could put notification stickers on juices for the juice machine, but the stickers must be stuck on before juices go in the machine to keep its stickiness.
Session 2- Balloons with a WOW
In Balloons with a WOW I learned how to tie balloons quicker without having to struggle and hurt your fingers. The demonstrator showed us a timing helium device that will make all balloons the same size. I also learned how to tie two, three, and four balloons together for an arch or tower.
Session 3- Win Your Challenges
In Win Your Challenges I learned that excuses are what stops you from reaching your goals, and with excuses, it's harder to reach your goal. The demonstrator inspired me to do what he did to reach my goal, rallying up all my challenges and knocking them down one by one. He also taught me that in life, it's You v.s. You, and blaming someone else is an excuse. I even learned to be more confident and say "It's nothing" to difficult challenges.
:]
Session 1-Balloons With a WOW
ReplyDeleteIn Balloons With a WOW, we were taught a more efficient way to tie a balloon. We were also taught how to tie several balloons together. The sizes of the balloons should be the same, and this can be accomplished by using two sticks. Spacing of the balloons on an arch is also important. The space between the necks of the balloons should be equal to the width of the actual balloon.
Session 2-Publicity With a Flair
In Publicity With a Flair, we were taught several ways of more creative and "eye-catchy" advertisement. One of which is using reverse psychology. For example, you can say,"Don't look up!" and most likely, they will look up. A poster could be hung on the ceiling in this scenario. Another idea I liked was "Free Candy!" Everyone loves free candy. We can fold flyers in half, and write free candy on one side. Students and teachers will be curious and open the paper, revealing information about upcoming events.
Session 3-Win Your Challenges
This session with Dee Hankins was very inspiring. He taught us many methods to reach your goals, as many people don't. We have to make sacrifices on the way, knowing that it will be worth while in the future. Inf life, no one is stopping us from reaching our goals, except ourselves. Making excuses is wrong, its always YOU vs. YOU, and no one else. Always think,"IT'S NOTHING!" and you're sure to succeed. Seeking your challenges and destroying them one by one to reach your goal, is another realistic method.
Session 4- Middle School Keynote
This last session taught us that taking risks is part of being a leader. We should always try something different, it may lead to the start of a new trend! We should never miss an opportunity to share ideas and use our skills as leaders.
Session 1-Team Buikding
ReplyDeleteIn team building personally I learned that its okay to step out of your comfort zone. I did this by playing a game that is like tag, except you hook arms with a partner. If you are tagged then you have to sing. :O (this wass the last thing I wanted to do) I was partners with Clara and unfortunately we got tagged. I was nervous but I thought of a really simple song, none other than THE ALPHABET SONG! We sang and in the end I learned that stepping out of your comfort zone is definitely a challenge, but when you do it it is not so bad after all. I also learned many other games that can help build teamwork within our leadership class.
Session 2- The Junk Show
The Junk Show is about spirit activities. But overall I learned things that can be more useful in other areas aswell. Obviously, our goal as a class is to get more participants including those who maybe sit alone or do not have that many friends. Our host said that when we do events or activities that are not as embarassing, more people will be willing to participate. One way we can do this is by chosing games/activites that involve a big group of people. Lastly, it is pretty obvious that we chose events where people do not get hurt.
Session 3-Ballroom
This was probably the most inspiring speech I have ever seen. In this session I have learned so many new techniques on how to 'Win my Challenges.' I have started setting my mind in a you vs. you point of view. I also learned that making excuses is the last thing you want to do when you do not achieve your goal. This will be the biggest challenge for me because when I get bad grades, I tend to blame it on the teachers and say,"They didn't give us enough time, or She gave too much work, or They did not even teach us this material!" From now on I will do my best not to make excuses. However, my favorite quote I learned was,"It's nothing!" Wow, this really changed my day. Today I even walked around saying it, and it surprisingly felt good. :)
Session 1: Don’t Worry, Be Happy
ReplyDeleteIn my first session we did multiple coin tosses till only on team was left. Esthel and I were the winning group. From this we learned four things:
1. Don’t focus on the past
2. Learn from your mistakes
3. Try again
4. Understand that failing is part of the process
If you are able to remember and follow these four tips, you will be successful in what you do and you will also be happy.
Session 2: Your Title-What’s Next?
In this session, Richard Parkhouse spoke about how our titles and the titles of other people shouldn’t affect us. I learned that our titles shouldn’t affect the way we treat people. We should always be treating everyone with same respect. I also learned that we need to acknowledge everyone’s differences and talents. We should also be giving the same rewards to groups when they succeed. People should be given a standing “O” which means we should recognize their achievements.
Session 3: Balloons with a WOW
I learned a new way to tie a balloon using the “ok” method. I also learned how to tie two and four balloons together. Matt McKinney also introduced me to many devices that can help make our balloon making more efficient. There is a device that lets out the same amount of helium with the press of a button. We can also buy High Flow to extend the life span of balloons. I learned how to make a “String of Pearls” arch and a “Zipper” arch.
Session 4: Middle School Keynote
In our last session Mike Smith taught me to never quit. He used his humor and life experiences to show us that life isn’t always easy. I also learned to take chances (as long as it is legal and it won’t hurt anyone).
Session 1: The Junk Show
ReplyDeleteThe Junk Show was my very first session, meaning that I arrived a bit late for it. Walking into the Junk Show was like walking into an insane asylum, as they were doing an activity already. I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a fun session. I learned about activities that we could use on one of our Spirit Days and about the concept of embarrassment in these types of activities, which was a repeating subject in the session. The speaker in the session told us about how activities embarrass people or how we could avoid this to just get a better, overall, fun experience. One activity that I enjoyed and think we should include is a game with an inflatable banana and two different groups of seats. Both groups of seats had about five seats in each row and about five rows. The two groups of seats were split down the middle. The game was basically passing a giant inflatable banana behind you to the person in the seat behind you, which then passed it behind them. When the banana reached the end, the people in the front ran to the back, took the banana and ran back to the front. The first team with the banana back in front wins. We could use this idea in a Spirit Day by modifying it slightly. We could use beach balls instead of bananas and the game could be much more fun with our amphitheater seating instead of just foldable chairs. We can also use multiple inflatable objects to make this activity a good fifteen minute game instead of one minute.
Session 2: Your Title- What Next
First, I need to get one thing straight- I barely understood the speaker in this session. It was not because of the big room or the microphone. It was the speaker's voice itself and what he said that confused me to the point of insanity. I know this is not a homework where we must critique our sessions, but this session was barely understandable in my opinion. That, along with the theme of the session (My title?)resulted in me learning almost nothing. I did get a few things, such as striving to be above average, but besides that, I got nothing out of this session.
Session 3: Team Building
My third session was team building, which was self explanatory- We learned how to cooperate and be a good team. In this session, we participated in some fun activities that altogether probably DOES make a better team. These activities are not necessarily spirit day material, however, as they are rather fun little activities we can do on Leadership class days or some Leadership field trip with our class. Activities included games for introducing and getting people to know each other better, team activities that needed a group of well cooperating people to accomplish, and games where we had to form groups. I learned a bunch of games from this session that we hopefully could use as a leadership class.
Session 4: Middle School Keynote
This was the last session I went to before lunch and going back to Alvarado. The speaker in this session, as this was another speech session in the Ballroom, was Mike Smith. I learned that the only thing separating me from my goals is myself and other important morals. The speaker in this session was much more understandable than the other speaker from Session 2. He was humorous and required our interaction during his talking which was a big plus at communicating what he wanted to tell us. I learned that, as a leader, if you do something, others will follow suit. Leaders set the path. I could use these to overcome obstacles in classes or in life.

ReplyDeleteSession 1- Friday Fun Days
ReplyDeleteMy first session was Friday Fun Days. In this session, I learned about some spirit day activities that we can do. I was a bit late to this session due to my poor sense of direction, so I was only able to learn about 2 of the 3 activities they had demonstrated. There was an obstacle course and a shooting game. The obstacle course had small teams while the shooting game had fairly large teams. We must be on a flat surface in order to prevent injuries from occurring.
Session 2: Balloons with a WOW
In this session, I learned many new things about balloons. I learned how to tie a balloon in a really easier way. I was astonished because I never imagined that tying balloons could be so simple and uncomplicated. I learned how to make different kinds of arches. Balloons have to be the same size and you can acquire that by using a very simple method. You can use 2 sticks or you can use a cardboard box that is approximately the size of the balloon you want. If the balloon doesn’t touch the sides of the box, it is too small and if it won’t fit into the box, it is too big.
Session 3- Win Your Challenges
This session was a speech made by Dee Hankins and he was very influential. I acquired information about the various ways that we can use to accomplish our goals. In order to reach our goals, we must “cry now and laugh later” which means that we should work hard and then have fun after our goal is completed. Do not criticize others for preventing you from achieving your goals, but yourselves because we are responsible for our own goals. Always have confidence and a positive attitude in what you are doing in order to do well; if you don’t have confidence in yourself, you will do poorly. You can build up confidence in yourself by saying the simple phrase Dee taught us, “IT’S NOTHING!” You must find and completely devour all your resources that can help you reach your goal.
Session 4- Middle School Keynote
This session was quite humorous. Mike Smith taught us how to be the leaders of our school. We must always stay focus and alert on whatever we need to do. Leaders go out of the box; if we do something unusual or different, other people may follow us.
Session 1: The Giving Tree
ReplyDeleteIn this session I learned that what we could give to others and how it would help them. Also, when you give to others don't be greedy and ask the others to give you something back. When we give it's more satisfying to give out of love instead of greed.
Session 2: Balloons with a WOW
In this session I learned how to tie a balloon easier and not be struggling with it. I learned about how balloons were made from, different types of balloons, and many diffent sizes of balloons. Also, I leaned how to put two or three or four or more balloons together and learned how to form and arc or square are.
Session 3: Win Your Challenges
In this session I learned not to say "I can't" and instead I would say "IT'S NOTHING." We follow our goals and we reaach to them, but we have to face challenges one by one. As you go on to reach to you goal there are never excuses because it's YOU vs YOU and no one else. When acheving your goal you need to find what you need, don't ever think negative because then you won't be able to "go fo it!" for you goal. Never give up!
Session 4: Middle School Keynote
In this session I learned how to stand up and be leaders in front of everyone. You take risks in life or being the first one to do something. We are the leaders of the school so we need to show the students who we are. When we do somthing different and you are the first to do it after people will follow you.
Session 1: You are the Leaders
ReplyDeleteIn 'You are the Leaders', the instructor taught us that some people are born with leader traits, such as charisma, honesty, and so on. However, there are skill sets, skill you can learn instead of being born with, such as being a listener, a speaker, and so on. He also taught us how to formally shake hands and introduce yourself.
Session 2: Friday Fun Days
The instructors introduced 3 games to us we can use on Spirit Days: Balloon Numbers, Lock 'n Roll, and High Hoops. Balloon Numbers is a game of math. There are balloons with the numbers 0-9 written randomly on them. There is a scooter board in the middle, with 'outcome' cards around the board. The outcome cards are labeled with different outcomes, such as, "Higher number wins" or "Lower number wins". There are going to be 6 people inflating balloons per team. Person 1 inflates balloon, ties it, runs to front, and stands. Person 2 inflates balloon, ties, it, runs to front, kneels in front of Person 1. Person 3 inflates balloon, ties it, runs to front, and stands next to Person 1. Person 4 inflates balloon, ties it, runs to front, and kneels next to person 2. Person 5 inflates balloon, ties it, runs to front, and stands next to Person 3. Person 6 inflates balloon, ties it, runs to front, and kneels next to Person 4. The other team(s) do(es) the same. When all the teams are done, you spin the person on the scooter board not too hard, and whichever way their feet are pointing to points to a card and that card represents the outcome. To read the number, you read from left to right going from top row, then to bottom row. For example, if Person 1 has 5, 2 has 9, 3 has 1, 4 has 7, 5 has 2, and 6 has 8, you would read the number like this: 591,728. So, the team that matches with the outcome wins.
The second game is Lock 'n Roll. The game is like a secret agent rescuing a teammate from a lock combination and chains. The secret agent has to wear a blindfold and crawl into a 'tunnel'. Once they are out of the tunnel, they have to inflate a balloon and pop it, with the combination of a lock inside it. Once the agent opens the lock, the agent and the rescued person go on a scooter board back to where the agent started and have to wait for their team to finish. The audience will return the scooter board to the tunnel. The first team to finish wins.
The last game is High Hoops. It's similar to basketball, but we use beach balls instead. You divide the audience into 4 quadrants. Each quadrant has their own hoop and a couple beach balls. There will be a large beach ball and several small balls. A large ball equals 5 points and a small ball equals 1 point. There will be a re bounder throwing the ball back into the audience. The 'hooper' holds the hoop and keeps track of how many points their team has. The team with the most points wins.
Session 3: Win Your Challenges
In 'Win Your Challenges', the instructor inspired many young minds that day. He taught us how to reach our goals using steps and strategies, like sacrificing what we want, cry now and laugh later, don't make excuses, think positive, be brave, seek and destroy, and one by one demolishing our challenges. Now I'm starting to use these strategies to overcome my challenges, too! And he also taught us to say, "It's nothing!" so we can think positive and overcome the challenge.
Session 1: In team building, I learned many games that helped us learn to become a team. For example, we played games like paper rock scissors, sing tag, and others. This teaches us to be aware and cooperative with others.
ReplyDeleteSession two: For got to dance, we learned that we should always have a budget before we get started on our planning. I also learned that butcher paper was a cheap and nice way to decorate large areas. It also stands out and makes a statement.
Session 3: In win you challenges, I was s=inspired by a young speaker, Dee Hankins. He told us that we should never say we can't do something, our mentality should be, "it's nothing!" This meant we could do ANYTHING!
I need to post three comments (including this one) because I have too many characters. -__-
ReplyDeleteSession One: Team Building
ReplyDeleteIn this session, I learned ways to earn and gain trust, work together, and interact with strangers. For trust, we learned this game called Electricity. People would sit back to back in two rows going straight down, and at the beginning of the rows would be one person, and at the end, another person. Everyone would hold hands with the person next to them, and the people at the end would hold hands with the connector people (people at the beginning and end). The beginner person would squeeze both hands that they’re holding, and each person will have to pass down the squeeze when they feel it, until it reaches the end person. The end person then decides who the first team to squeeze their hand was. We learned teamwork by playing a game called Captain’s Calling. This game required solo missions, two people missions, three, four, and five people missions. People who are called out or can’t find a partner or partners to achieve the mission with would have to walk the plank, which was to walk around the other players singing. I learned a way to interact with strangers by playing a game called Rock Star. This game required everyone to play rock paper scissors. You start out as an egg, and then if you win someone in a battle of rock paper scissors, you become a chicken. After chicken, you become a dinosaur, and finally, a rock star. Then, you battle other rock stars. If a rock star loses to you, then they have to join your band by putting their hands on your shoulders and follow you. If you lose to another rock star, you join their band. We can use these ways to help make our Leadership class or ASB closer together, as there are some people in the class that I personally don’t know very well.
Session Two: The Junk Show
At the Junk Show, I learned some spirit day activities and also some hints. These ideas and clues can be used to improve our spirit days and have more people participate who don’t usually do so. Some hints that the speaker informed us about were that we should make events where people don’t get hurt (both feet on the ground), have cheerful or popular music to attract more people (which we already have), and get as many kids involved in the events. How do we do the last point? Well, we can start off by getting to know some shy people. Once you get to know them, they’ll break out of their shells and maybe you can convince them to participate in one of the spirit day activities! Also, the reason why some students do not want to participate is because they aren’t okay with being embarrassed, while we have no problem being embarrassed in front of our fellow classmates. So, an activity we could have would be Name That Singer, where you play a few seconds of each song (25 songs or so) and have the participants write the singer of the songs played in order on a sheet of paper. Then they turn in the paper, and we determine who the winner(s) is/are. Also, a lot of participants cheat, so we have to watch them very closely during games that require a lot of movement or partnership.
Session Three: Win Your Challenges
ReplyDeleteThis session was mainly about motivation and inspiring us to reach our goals. Our speaker had a way for us to keep listening to him, and he taught us that “with every goal comes a challenge that prevents you from reaching that goal.” He said that instead of avoiding the challenges and just reaching your goal, we should knock down each and every challenge one by one first. He told us stories about his life and what he learned. I learned from his life that in order to win our challenges, we must make sacrifices. Dee Hankins taught me to “cry now, laugh later.” He told us to stop making pointless excuses for ourselves when really we could do so much better. He spoke to us about commitment, which is very important when it comes to reaching our goals. Never give up. We could all use these motivational words to help keep us going when we feel like there’s no where else to go.
Session Four: Middle School Keynote
This speaker used his humor and his life experiences to teach us about being leaders. Leaders have huge responsibility, and many people will follow what we do. He taught us to never give up, and always try new and unusual (no matter how strange, as long as it’s not too strange) things. Taking risks is what leaders are not afraid to do. He also taught us to kick out the obstacles of our life. We always have the chance to be a leader, whether it’s in front of the school, in front of your family, or even in front of strangers!
Team building
ReplyDeleteIn this session, I learned the importance of teamwork as well as cooperativeness. What we basically did was to interact with people you do not know or know. Even though I didn't know a lot of those leadership students from the other school, we had built new experience by playing those game such as sing tag, electricity, and captain is calling. Unfortunately, Emily and I got caught during the game called sing tag and had to sig ABC in front of the crowds. But it was very fun and meaningful.
Balloons with the wow
In this session, I learned how to tie the balloons in a very simple way. What the instructor taught us were very interesting and surprising. Without getting hurt your fingers hurt from the balloons, you can easily tie them with only two fingers by making ok sign. Instructor told us all the informations of air and helium. We were not to suck helium because it was expensive, but they are not any good to your body. However, by tying two balloons together you are able to make pretty arch or decoration.
Win your challeges
In this session, the instructor demonstrated us how important you set your goal and sacrifice things to earn another thing. He told us that we should always think positive and say "it's nothing" to make anything work.he encouragedme to challenge furthermore.
Session 1: Youre are the leaders
ReplyDeleteIn the session You are the Leaders, i have learned that meeting new people is a part of what leaders do and that everybody wants to FIT IN. I had also learned about natural handshakes( the hand hug) and i also learned many about the percentages of kids dropping out because they didnt fit in with other kids in school.
Session 2: Balloons with a WOW.
In Balloons with a WOW i had learned how to tie a balloon in an easier and faster way. He taught us many things about helium and also taught us how to make a balloon arch. The demonstartor show us a helium timer thing and show us how to make ALL balloons the SAME size.
session 3: Win your challenges
In win your challenges i had learned to NOT MAKE EXCUSES and how important it is to set a goal and to reach that goal. He had taught us that " ITS NOTHING!" will work on any question. The speaker had told us to seek and destory and to always think POSITIVE.
Session 1- Balloons With a Wow
ReplyDeletethis session was very intresting and one of the thngs I learned was how to tie a balloon with just an ok sign. I was also surprised to find out that there is a type of machine that can blow up balloons the exact same size. There is also a type of liquid called hifloat that helps helium balloons float for a longer period of time.
Session 2- Friday Fun Days
Friday fun days was an upbeat, fun session that I learned many things from. One thing I learned is a way to get people to sit with new people, all you have to do is seperate them from month and day of birth. I also learned that when we create an activity for spirit days we have to take all the dangers in hand and find ways to avoid them. Not only do we have to take precaution we have to work out all the glitches and have multiple test runs.
Session 3- Win Your Challenges
This session was the most inspiring and intresting session because of Dee Hankins. Dee was very figurative and had some very important things to say. one thing i learned that is holding me back from winning my challenges is excuses. I also learned that when you make a mistake it's only YOU VS. YOU and nobody else has to get involved. There was also a saying Dee taught us to say when we're asked to do something "IT'S NOTHING" and this will help you win a lot more challenges.
The Junk Show
ReplyDelete-I learned how we can get people to participate even if they don't want to at spirit day. I also learned some fun games to play like the mop partner game, the linking arms game, and the spelling game.
Balloons With a Wow
- I learned to tie ballons using the ok method. I also learned how we can save money by using and air pump for ballons that don't need to float. Another thing I learned is that we can get a measuring instrument so all our balloons are the exact same size.
Your Title whats Next
-I learned that we are the leaders and we need to be able to be an example and to always be focused and on top of things. I also learned about the standing O and how we are always performing. Another important thing that I learned was that we souldn't catagorize people by groups and we shouldn't only praise certain groups or people. we should let them all know we are there for them.
Balloons with a wow
ReplyDelete- At balloons with a wow I learned many useful things to help us as a leadership class to save time and money. To stop balloons from popping the best quality balloon is Qualtex. Also we often have problems in making the balloons we blow up the same size so a referance we can use is to make all of the balloons in a teardrop shape. And lastly HiFlow will make the balloons last longer so we could make the balloons ahead of time.
Team building
-At team building we learned that being silly is the best way to get comfortable with each other. Some of the games we played were Do you love your neighbor? where we stand in a circle and people ask questions and if the question pertains to you you have to run to a new spot. However one of my favorite games we played was electricity where you have to squeeze each ohers hands and pass it along.
Win your challenges
- win your challenges was probably my favorite session mainly because of the speaker Dee Hakins. I was extremely inspired and learned how I and we could reach our goals by perservering through our challenges
Session 1: Friday Fundays
ReplyDeleteIn this session, Rick Kent and Kevin Lorch told us about how to have fun activities in your school. They organized the people in our session by months. They organized the months into halves and fourths. They said this was a good way beacause 12 can be very flexible when grouping. They also said that it's good to get as much as people as possible so people can be more invovled. We got to play games. They made the suggestion to wear things during they play so it can be more interactive. They also stressed on the danger issures there may be when playing your games. So, they said to edit and improvise on how to play to make it fun and safe.
Session 2: Your title- What next
In the beginning of this session, Richard Parkhouse talked about a major issue in schools and it was bullying. He then started to talk about Standing-O-Leadership. He said that you need to be a leader and respect evertone and all other groups. He said in high school, when you're in a group, when you have a title, you will stand out in your application. He said what checking you out is, and he said some examples: see how you do stuff, body language, can see what is in you that you can't see. This can be inspirational and can influence other people to be a better person.
Session 3: Team Building
In this session, we played team building activities. In the beginning we played, Bullseye, this game was about putting your arms around the shoulders of the person next to you. Then we look down, then on bullseye, we look up, whoever eyes you are looking at in an awkward way you go out of the circle and interat with each other. There were other games that had more action. We could use these activities for our class to be more close and work better together. She also metioned that every year, they would go up to near San Fransisco and camp at the beach. At the beach, they would play team-building activites and break all the boundries between them.
Session 4: Middle School Keynote
In this session, we were intoduced witha little humor and motivation. Mike Smither told the responsiblities that a leader must take on and the risk we should take. He said we shouldn't be afraid to do things and try new things. Even thogh they might be hard to do, it's better than not doing it at all. Overall, this inspirtional speech was to have the great traits of leaders and use them with purpose.
You Are the Leaders
ReplyDeleteEven though I was late to this session, I really loved this session. My speaker for this session was Mike Smith. He had asked what we search in leaders, he had explained two types. The first were the tratis that you were naturally given, and the other was something that could be learned over time. He explained to us we as leaders, really need to step into the shoes as a leader. We the leaders have to bring the school together, that's why ASB stands for, Associated Student Body. One question he had asked me in paticular was, how many people are in your ASB? I had answer 16, and he told me I was wrong. He said the number of ASB is the number of students at your school, and that's very true.
Your Title-What’s Next?
This was my second session. Like Mike Smith, Richard Parkhouse had one important message that stood out to me. Although I didn't really understand some of the stuff that he was saying, I thought the stuff i heard was pretty good. The one thing he pointed out alot was how your title does not make you anything, it's what you do that makes you something. People take their titles too much, and do not actually step into that title. Do you take this title as an ASB/Leadership student for selfish reaons, or reasons to help the school?
Session 3: Team Building
This session was about, well.... team building! We had an ASB advisor from Nothern California guide us through small team building games. Fun, interactive games, and effective in letting people get more comfortable around one another. She emphasized on how if we can't work together as an ASB, how can we work together with the whole school? There were a list of games she had given us, I would share them with the class in future discussions.
session 1: you are the leader- In this seminar, Mike Smith (the keynote speaker)told us that we leaders should develope skillsets to help the whole school. A skillset is something that you can learn to do. Mr. Smith named quite a few skillsets such as: listening attentively, smiling even though you dont feel like it, and public speaking and conveying ideas. Also, he asked us to tell him how many people were in ASB. When Rosanne told him 16 people, he said that it was wrong and corrected her by saying that the whole school's population was the ASB. Next he asked us why people would want to stay connected to the school (or something along those lines). The reason, he said, was that people want to have a reason to BE and feel significant. he said that half the kids who drop out of school are not because they are failing. It is because people do not feel like they belong and that they have no reason to be at school. Mr. smith said that maybe the ASB should include people like that so dat the drop out decreases.
ReplyDeletesession 2: junk show- i accidently went to the wrong place, but it was beneficial all the same. The message was that some people who usually dont participate in spirit days could if the right activity was going on. The people who participate on spirit days are people who are willing to be embarrassed. however, there are people who would like to participate but dont want to be embarrassed. We should have more activities that involve those kind of people too.
session 3: team building- this speaker told us to get loose and have a lot of fun. Thats how we could connect with each other in ASB. If we didnt know each other well, how could we possibly grasp the school? We played silly games to get loose and learn about the other strangers in area E. After that session ended, there were no more strangers in that room because i knew them all.
session 4:keynote- ithink that the speakers quotes just sum it up so here they are:
"its not what you think. its not what i think. its what you think i think and its what i think you think...dont you think?" That means that your opinion about how others view you does not count. others judge you by your actions. "leaders set the standards. leaders make the choices." that means that followers will emulate you so you should always make right choices and good descisions. "what you do, who you are, the choices you make MATTER." that quote pretty much explains itself.
my mom said "A word of wisdom to you all: listen to your mom!"
ReplyDeleteSession 1: Balloons with a WOW
ReplyDeleteIn balloons with a wow, I learned a better way to tie a balloon. We were also taught about a machine that controls the helium so that you can have the same size balloons. We were taught how to tie several balloons together so that you can make an arc. You need to have the same size balloons on an arc and they also need to be evenly spaced out.
Session 2: Turning Dances into Parties
In Turning Dances into Parties, we were taught ways to advertise our dances and activities. They also talked to us about different themes and decorations for the dance. They gave us a list we need to follow so that we can have a great dance.
1. Select a theme
2. Put together a budget
3. Decorations
4. Tickets and Publicity
5. Food and Drinks
6. Music
7. Clean- up
They had suggestions about having fun songs to play at the dance such as: Bunny Hop, Electric Slide, Hokey Pokey, and The Chicken Dance. They had informed that these songs will have lots of people participating (including the ones that stand in the corners).
Session 3: Win Your Challenges
Win Your Challenges is very powerful; it could change your live by helping you achieve your goals. We have to take control and stop making excuses. Excuses just get in your way so that you wouldn’t be able to achieve your goal. In live it is you vs. you; you cannot blame other people for your mistakes or expect them to care. You need to cry now and laugh later; all your hard work now will pay off in the future. There are always many ways to achieve your goals, you just have to be willing to find them.
Session 1- The Junk Show
ReplyDeleteThe Junk Show was a session about Spirit Days. The instructor made us participate in a lot of games, and gave us a lot of helpful hints. One activity we played was a game where we had to guess the song artist. He told us that this kind of activity would get a lot of people to participate. For us, he put on 5 songs, but he told us we should do about 15-20 songs, depending on how much time we have. Also, he told us some hints. He told us that we should always have a back-up plan/idea. For example, he told us to pretend our activity included water balloons. He asked us, if one of the balloons dropped while we were setting up, what would happen? Of course, our event would be a fail. In order for that NOT to happen, he said we should at least blow up more balloons.
Session 2- Team Building
I loved Team Building. In the beginning, she mentioned that her ASB students would go to a beach in San Francisco and camp out there for a few days. Then, the instructor made us play a variety of team activities. The first activity was called Bullseye. In this activity, everybody circled up in a team, and we all had our arms wrapped around each other. One person would call "Bullseye!" and then everyone would look up. If you made eye contact with anyone, you would have to leave the circle WITH that person and basically talk with the person about your school. Even thought it was awkward, she said it was a good way to interact with someone. We had many other activities that had to do with teams. She told us being silly was the best way to interact with each other.
Session 3- Win Your Challenges
I LOVED Win Your Challenges. Dee Hankins was so inspirational! At first, he started off by telling us about his young childhood life. Then, he told us some tips on how we could be successful. One method he told us was putting your goals in the back, and steps in the front. Another method he told us was the You vs. You method. This method means that it's only YOU, and not anybody else.
Session 4- Middle School Keynote
In this session, I learned on how we could become a better leader. Mike Smith, the speaker, told us that we should ALWAYS take risks. He told us taking risks was one step on becoming a leader. No matter how embarrasing the risk was, he told us we should always try it anyways.
I had spent around 20 minutes typing each and every session that I attended and learned from in the Cada Conference, but the comment wouldn't post and all my work was deleted. Thats okay though because one of the things I learned was staying positive. Typing the entire comment over again? "It's Nothing!" (: Session 3 Win Your Challenges Reference.
ReplyDeleteSession 1: Opening the Closed Door
In this session, we were put into groups that faced others in a coin toss game which had results based completely off chance. Ashley, Patrick, and I ended up in second place right behind Jasmine and Esthel (Congratulations to them). From this experience, we learned to accept losing use it to motivate yourself rather than be a negative thing. We were taught that to be triumphant, we need to learn from our mistakes and not give up when events don't turn out the way you had hoped. Persistence is something that can really help you get through life as long as you understand that failing is "part of the process" of achieving. In the end, we were given a makeshift wristband with a quote that said "...learning is, after all; not whether we lose the game, but how we lose & how we've changed because of it.... Losing in a curious way, is winning." --R.Bach. These words sum up Opening the Closed Door.
Session 2: Balloons with a WOW
In Balloons with a WOW, the speaker taught us an especially efficient technique of tying a balloon. This method involved pinching the neck of the balloon using your fingers in an "OK" shape. We also learned about the origin and danger of sucking in helium to change your voice. If someone attempts this, they have to make sure to take breaths of oxygen between breaths of helium. We also learned about spectacular structures that can be formed by balloons such as tunnels, a String of Pearls, and columns of balloon bunches. These are supposedly simple to make and provide a carefree partying atmosphere. Balloons must also be tied equal distance from the other when making an arch and have the same size. To keep size constant, you should purchase two sizing sticks or cut a 10 1/2 in square for the balloons to fit through. There also was different types of balloons such as flashy foil covered ones good for indoor decor. These ideas about balloons could really help in making our dances and events dazzling.
I have to split off into more than one comment because of character limit.
Session 3: Win Your Challenges
ReplyDeleteThis session led by speaker Dee Hankins would have to be my favorite during the Cada Conference. Dee spoke about his back-story and used it to show how he went through life and became successful despite challenges and discouraging words. He did this by prioritizing goals and creating techniques that are simple yet inspiring. Hankins told of the Seek and Destroy method of overcoming obstacles which meant you had to search for your resources and utilize them to the fullest. Then, give back by spreading your knowledge or returning to the resource. He told everyone to avoid distractions no matter how tempting since they will only slow you down and keep you from accomplishing anything. Sacrifice may be tough, but if you "Cry now, laugh later" the events or fun activities you missed will be worth it. Dee talked about being 100% committed to whatever you're doing and to not lose hope or make excuses. He revealed to us that the only person that could keep you from doing what you hope to do is yourself, and you shouldn't blame others for failure. If you go through life with a "YOU CAN" state of mind and tell yourself "It's Nothing!" theres no limit to the things that can be done.
Session 4: Middle School Keynote
This session led by Mike Smith was very exciting. Mike kept everyone focused using his quick paced talking and unique, interactive mini-games for everyone. It helped make the experience memorable and show one of the points: leaders should not be afraid to try new ideas and change from original plans. He told stories about how he still acted like a child at times, not caring about the stares he got or the embarrassment it brought to his kids. This shows that leaders must be able to go through events with a positive attitude and fear criticism. Another thing he tried to talk about was that we must stay focused since we have to guide our schools in the correct directions. He did this by playing a tricky hand game that fooled many, including myself, who couldn't change once we got into this steady rhythm in our arms. One of his speedy phrases that I do not remember accurately was something like,"If it's not illegal, it won't cost you anything, if it wont hurt anyone, you might enjoy it, might have fun doing it, then you might as well try it." This is another way of saying that we should be open to all possibilities and not stick with the same, worn-out thought patterns. These are just a few of the methods Mike used to teach us focus, creativity, and just pure fun.
Session 1- Balloons with a WOW.
ReplyDeleteIn this session I learned about various ways to decorate with balloons. One of the most useful things that we learned at Balloons with a WOW was a faster and easier way to tie balloons. This is something that everyone in the class can use quite often, and it will save much time. I also learned about some balloon arches and pillars that could be used to decorate the dance. When I learned how to make the arches, I learned that the balloons should always be the same size and should be evenly spaced out. There was a machine that could be purchased for all balloons to be made the same sign.
Session 2- What's Next?
During this session, I struggled with clearly hearing and understanding the speaker. However, I was able to learn something. In the beginning he talked about bullying and how it's a major issue at any school. He also talked about Standing O Leadership. Richard Parkhouse told us about how we should always recognize people for their achievements and give them the Standing O they deserve. He also told us that titles are not what we use to categorize ourselves. This can apply to anyone in leadership. We are all given the title of leaders at the school, but it is what we do with that title that makes us the leaders.
Session 3- Publicity With a Flair
In my opinion, this session was one where I absorbed the most information. I learned many various ways to publicize our events, such as the dance. One way was to use the clocks in the classrooms. It's quite clear that many students have a tendency to take a quick glance at the clock every once in a while in class. We can place words around the clock that include the information of our event (ex. Time is running out, buy your dance tickets!). Another way I learned how to publicize was wearing your information. As any event approaches, all leadership students can wear a cape, hat, tie, or duct tape on your shoe that inclues the information about your event. Not only is this a great way to publicize, but it isn't too expensive.
I didn't know what the Mike Smith one was called.
ReplyDeleteSession 4: Middle school keynote we learned from Mike Smith taught and trained us to become focused listeners by talking in a fast pace. He also came up with fun little games we played. Mike also told us "If it's not illegal, it won't cost you anything, if it wont hurt anyone, you might enjoy it, might have fun doing it, then you might as well try it." In other words, everything can be experienced.
Session 1- Opening the Closed Door
ReplyDeleteAt this session, we began with a coin toss to see what we would learn from it. I learned that if you lose in something, it doesn't mean you should stop trying. Also, in life, you won't always win and shouldn't dwell on the past. You should always learn from your mistakes so you realize what to do differently next time. Sometimes, the most successful people are the ones who pick themselves up.
Session 2- Invisible Students
At this session, I had realized that if you work in groups, you have a better chance at succeeding than by yourself. You should always help others. Some of the people that feel left out are always in the shadow because they are too shy to say hello. A program called Mix It Up helps students that feel left out, join others on a certain day.
Session 3 - Win Your Challenges
This session was held by Dee Hawkins, a student that succeed in life by setting and achieving goals. He told us to seek and destroy by overcoming any obstacles that was ahead. Dee mentioned a story about himself writing an essay. He was very tired and listening to music so on the essay, he decided to write the music's lyrics. The story made my eyes open because half of the time that we do our homework is with music. He devoted his time by spending ONLY 2 hours on homework. His sacrifices needed commitment which allowed him to succeed in life. Dee always told us not to make any excuses and blame only our self. The main thing that surprised me was how he had a lot of work and decided to say, " It's Nothing!"
Session 4- Middle School Keynote
This session was led by Mike Smith. He kept us very entertained with a mini game and very fast talking. It was very hard to tell what he was saying because he was able to say it in less than 40 seconds. One of the mini games was a hand game. He would slide his hands up and down and we would clap. A lot of students were tricked by him because he would stop at the last moment. He taught us how to be better leaders by trying new ideas. In order to prepare a successful event, we must be focus on what we can do. Mike interacted with us by telling us to repeat his words and turning our faces to the person next to us. His session was to teach us how to be different but in a good way
Session one:Invisible students
ReplyDeleteThis session talked about the invisible students in the campus. The one with one friends. Sometimes, when you befriend someone like that, you can change their whole life. We can step up, and be the first to do everything. For example, the speaker showed me a video of a change in just 3 minutes. It was just one person dancing alone ifront of everyone at first, but then another person jumped in too. Then, that started a whole chain reaction. Soon, everyone was up and dancing. You may thing the person getting the credit is the person that started this, but it was the second person, the follower that started it all. But when making friends with a person that just transfered schools, you cant explode with energy and questions at them, instead, lower your energy level down to theirs.Lastly, we can make a movie day during lunch for those students that are "invisible" just for them. So they feel like their special, they can also relate with the other "invisible" students and can all be friends.
Session 2: I had a hard time understanding what the speaker was saying. But in the begining, he talked about bullying and how its affecting everyone nation wide. And then he talked about the Standing "0", being spectacular, and showing everyone what you can do everyone you get on stage, was the message I got personally.
Session 3: Publicity with a Flair
In this session, i learned alot of new ways to advertise everything. For example, everyone wants to get out of class, so they look at the clock now and then, but then around the clock, there will be a little strip of flyer telling you the information. For flyers, we can hang them in the bathroom, where they can do their business, but have something to read at the same time too. Though, because it's in the bathroom, someone has to change it everyday incase of writings or someone throwing it away. We can also put flyers on the ceiling, first puting one on a wall, telling them to look up, then seeing a flyer on the ceiling. You can also make little pyramids on the lunch tables, like the ones you see in resteraunts and the mall, some people will try to be funny and put it on their head. But now, you have a walking advertisement. This ones my favorite advertisement strategy, :). One student goes in to the most populated place during nutrition with a beat box, then turns it on and begins dancing. The other leadership students (knowing the dance) drop their back packs and join in dancing, grabbing everyones attention, then, telling them about the dance or whatever event. We can also write on windows, or the side walk.
Session 4- Middle School Keynote
This session was very entertaining with alot of interactment. Like clapping, turning to the other person, and moving. Though, he got the message through that if we, the leaders, dont do it first, who will? If we start it, people will begin to join in. He also tought us to try anything, as long as its not illegal,it wont cost you anything,it wont hurt anyone, and that you might have fun doing it.
Session #1: BALLOONS WITH A WOW!
ReplyDeleteOur instructor there told us about an easier way to tie balloons. (The "OK" sign) Another thing he taught us is different ways to make balloon arches and ziplines. Also, I learned that instead of using scissors to cut a messed up balloon from the arch or zipline, just slide the balloon to and fro so that it burns and comes off without having to risk cutting the arch's string. Another thing is that we learned how to tie the balloons onto the string easily, also use the "OK" sign. The zipline is a set of balloons with an equal amount of spacing so that you can fit two other balloons between them so that it creates a butterfly effect.
Session #2: You Are The Leaders
In this session, I was taught through a slideshow. This slideshow was clear and easily understood. The man told us that, as the leaders, we have to give our best Standing "O." This means that we show potential by expressing our talents, gifts, and skills daily. Also, we have to make good impression to the people. To show this means to ask yourself, who are your role models? And how can you be more like them and why? Passion is also a crucial part of showing your best Standing "O." This means to find your passion and you'll never feel like you are wasting your time working a day in your life. He also reminded us something many of us has forgotten over the years, "No one believes in you until you believe in yourself." He inspired us by telling us to lose ourselves when we give our best Standing "O."
Session #3: Friday Fun-days!
In this session, we played numerous games. However, we were arranged by our birth months in 12 groups. The first game is called BALLOON NUMBERS. In this game, there are 2 groups of 6. The first people from each team get a balloon and a hat and race to the other side of the room and inflate their balloon. Then, the next people go and so on. When all 6 from each team are there with inflated balloons, they form 2 groups of 3 in each team. Then, the person on the spinner spins to see what the "outcome" placard would be. The outcome would determine which team wins. Another game is a game involving a secret agent theme called LOCK 'N ROLL. Basically, players are blindfolded in hats while they hold deflated balloons with lock combinations written on each of them. The objective was to crawl through a tunnel blindfolded to reach 3 teammates that were chained to chairs. You must find the teammate that has the lock on the chain that matches the combination on their balloon. After that, the blindfolded agent is rolled across the room on scooter boards. Whichever team finishes first wins. The last game I experienced is called HIGH HOOPS. It involves mini beach balls, a few large beach balls, and High hoops! You throw the mini beach balls in your hoop for 1 point and the big beach ball for 5 points. The team with the most points wins.
Session #4: Middle School Keynote
During this session, an inspirational man named Mike Smith taught us about leadership. He said that leaders need to be focused. Also, he taught that thinking sometimes is a tricky thing because planning something involves the thoughts of others. Mike said, "It's not what I think, it's what I think you think and what you think I think that matters. He also stated that when people get challenged and tricked too often, they tend to give up easily. Mike also told us that many changes in life aren't our decision and we have to deal with it ourselves no matter what the challenges you meet in life are. He said that we should try our best and if it isn't illegal, it won't hurt anyone, take the risk, enjoy it, and go for it. Being happy is a great way to being great leaders as well, so be happy, and put a smile on your face. Mike Smith also stated that, the leaders set the standards and make the choices for the others.
Session 1: Team Building- This session was really entertaining. I got to interact with other leadership student from different schools. There were a lot of great ideas such as Sing Tag. Luckily, Jonathan and I weren't tagged. There were other games such as Rock Star and Captain's Calling.
ReplyDeleteSession 2: Invisible Students- The speaker in this session told us that the first follower has a big impact on the rest of the followers. If you work in groups, there's a higher chance of you in succeeding with your goal. He gave us a lot of interesting ideas to persuade the left out kids to join us in events. Such as Don't Wear Shoes day and Mix It Up day.
Session 3: Win Your Challenges- The session with Dee Hankins was very exciting and there was never a moment when I was not captured by his inspirational speech. He taught me to "cry now, and laugh later." Dee Hankins told us to have a "You Can state of mind", meaning to be positive. Dee told us that anything is possible and encouraged me to say "it's nothing!" This was by far, my favorite session.
Sorry I am late I was filled with all kinds of things to do and forgot about the blog. I am really sorry.
ReplyDeleteSession 1: The Junk Show
Here I learned that the people in the crowd could also participate in the activities without even getting up. Also I learned that we need extra supplies for spirit day activities. For example if you have to play with a balloon and it pops what do you do. Fail that is right. Well if we had extra then we wouldn't fail.
Session 2: What's Next?
In this activity the speaker, Richard Parkhouse taught us about bullies and how we can stop them. He was a little hard to listen to but he also talked about a Standing O. This is something that you can give to everyone for doing things good or kind.
Session 3: Fun Fridays
This is a class where we did spirit activities. We learned how some flaws can never be solved but most flaws can be. We played three games and they all were very fun. All of these things could be done at our school and maybe even better. I learned that whatever game you make up or do there will be flaws.
Session 4: Middle school keynote
In this class or session we learned from Mike Smith how to be a leader. He had us do things to show in common we all are. He said that we should take risk and enjoy the results. I was moved by his speech and thought that he did a really excellent job.
Again I am very sorry this is late.
Session 1: Friday Fun Days
ReplyDeleteHere I learned that the location of your activity matters. You shouldn't do activites on stage if you know that there is either not enough room or, if participants may fall off the stage due to maybe perhaps being blindfolded. In this session, they introduced many new activities to the students such as, Balloon numbers, Lock'n roll, and high hoops. The instructor said that there are many types of activities that do not take much time to set up but aren't really exciting. He said that there are also some activities that are very exciting and fun but will take some time to set up. He says that in the end, it is worth it to set up the exciting activities because in the end all the students seem to have a good time.
Session 2: Team building
This instructor taught us leadership students how to interact with the people we never even dreamed of talking to. She made all the students get involved with fun activities we all enjoyed. One of the activities was called Bullseye. In this activity, all the students have to form a circle, and a person would call out bullseye. Once a person calls out the word bullseye, you look up and see if you are having eye contact with anyone. If you are, you leave the circle with that person, and tell him/her a little about yourself.
Session 3: Win your challenges
In this session,Dee Hankins taught me how to deal with life. He taught me to always look at things positively and say "its nothing!" He says that if you believe that you can do something, the chances are you can really do it. You just have to take action of your thoughts and set a goal for yourself. The last thing I learned during that session is to deal with my challenges first and then i can have fun later.

ReplyDeleteIn team building we formed a circle with strangers from different schools. I learned a lot of great games to play with your friends. It was a great way to interact with classmates.
session 2: Balloons with a WOW.
During this session I learned a very convenient way of tying balloons. He taught us a very easy way and fast way to make arches. He taught us different types of arches using small and big balloons.
session 3: Win your challenges
In this session Dee Hankins taught us to never give up on our goals. He gave us advice to never be lazy and whenever someone tells you to do something you must respond by saying "It's nothing!"
